EU PVSEC 2026 Plenary “Sneak” Preview - Wednesday

Welcome to our second “sneak” preview of the Plenary sessions of the 2026 EU PVSEC in Rotterdam. The morning of Wednesday, 16th September is reserved for two plenary sessions covering the technology innovations of PV solar energy conversion. Before the Session covering the mainstream Si-technologies we scheduled at 8:30 the session CP1 titled Thin-Film PV Technologies Towards Impact. The title reflects, to a certain extent, the situation that Si-PV constitutes by far the current markets and industries, due to its high efficiency and steep cost decrease. However, concerns about material consumption and circularity seem to give now a 2nd opportunity for thin-film technologies, in particular when configured in multijunction structures. But the rapid efficiency rise of Perovskite technologies has given a new enthusiasm to engage in the development of thin film technologies and their “manufacturability”.

"Modeling of Energy Systems with PV and BESS Integration Into the Grid"

Daniele Spinella, PwC Germany

Solar photovoltaics is now the cheapest source of electricity in much of the world, yet its value increasingly depends on when, not just how much, energy is produced. Pairing PV with battery energy storage systems (BESS) turns a variable generator into a flexible, grid-friendly asset — but capturing that value is, at its core, a modeling problem. This lecture introduces how PV+BESS systems are modeled from two complementary angles. The techno-economic view shows how multiple use cases and revenue streams — energy arbitrage, ancillary services, capacity remuneration and renewable support schemes — are "stacked" into a viable business case. The operational view shows how forecasting and optimization algorithms decide, in real time, how to charge and discharge the battery. Using intuitive models and concrete examples from utility-scale Italian projects, attendees will see how design choices, market rules and grid constraints jointly determine the value of the combined system.

EU Funding Academy: Two Practical Workshops to Strengthen Your EU Funding Skills

Ahead of the EU PVSEC and on the same day as the PV Academy, on 13 September 2026, two exclusive hands-on workshops will be hosted, designed to help researchers, project managers, financial officers, and proposal writers strengthen the skills that matter most throughout the EU project lifecycle.

Whether you are managing an ongoing Horizon Europe project or preparing your next proposal, these interactive sessions offer practical guidance, real-world examples, and the opportunity to discuss your own challenges with experienced WIP experts.

Workshop 1: EU Projects Financial Management – From Grant Agreement to Audit Readiness

12:00–14:30 CET
With Christine Meyer-Häge, Head of Project Finance and Controlling at WIP Renewable Energies

Managing the financial side of Horizon Europe projects requires more than understanding the rules. It requires applying them correctly throughout the entire project. Even small errors in financial reporting or cost eligibility can have significant consequences.

In this practical workshop, participants will:
  • Gain a clear understanding of Horizon Europe financial rules#
  • Learn how to avoid common reporting and eligibility mistakes
  • Strengthen budget management and audit readiness
  • Practice calculating personnel costs through a guided exercise
  • Discuss individual project questions in a small-group setting

Workshop 2: EU Projects Proposal Writing – From Vision to Success

15:00–18:00 CET
With Benedetta Di Costanzo, Senior Project Manager at WIP Renewable Energies

Successful proposals are built on more than innovative ideas. They need a compelling narrative, a convincing project structure, and a clear understanding of what evaluators are looking for.

During this workshop, Benedetta Di Costanzo will share practical strategies for developing competitive Horizon Europe proposals, including insights into the evaluation process, common strengths of successful applications, and techniques for communicating project ideas effectively.

Why Join?

Both workshops are intentionally limited to a small number of participants to encourage active discussion, individual feedback, and practical exchange. Rather than focusing on theory alone, the sessions are designed to provide immediately applicable knowledge that participants can transfer directly to their own EU projects.

Take this excellent opportunity to deepen your expertise before the main event starts and connect with fellow professionals facing similar project challenges.
We look forward to welcoming you in Rotterdam.
