| Five Core Challenges of the European Solar Photovoltaics Research and InnovationWith
an impressive 45% annual growth rate in 2022 compared to 2021, the PV
community around the world is working hard to meet the ambitious targets
of 2 TW cumulative capacity by 2025 and 3.5 TW by 2027. Europe,
specifically, can play a major role in the transition to clean and
renewable energy as it aims to become the first climate-neutral
continent by 2050. As an essential first step in this strategy, the EU
aims to reach a 30GWp/year domestic production of solar PV by 2025.
So far, solar PV – with its unprecedented growth, continuously
decreasing cost, and increasing social acceptance - has already proven
to be economically and environmentally competitive. However, due to this
spectacular growth path, it may not be universally recognized that the
potential for further innovation of PV is still enormous. Thus, in order
to quickly become one of the few decisive contributors to the
clean-energy system, solar PV must successfully address further
challenges related to device innovation, manufacturing, integration, and
circularity.
The Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA), published in 2022
by the European Technology and Innovation Platform for Photovoltaics
(ETIP PV) in collaboration with the European Energy Research Alliance
for PV (EERA-PV) presents five challenges for further innovation and
outlines comprehensive strategies and clear targets for each of them.

European Technology and Innovation Platform for Photovoltaics (ETIP PV) / Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin for Materials and Energy | Sneak Peek of the Opening SessionThe
opening session of the EU PVSEC will start at 08:30 with a scientific
opening and plenary session on “Sustainable PV” chaired by Robert Kenny and Joao Serra. Following this, the prestigious Becquerel Prize will be awarded to Gunter Erfurt. The award ceremony will be chaired by Christophe Ballif.
At the 40th jubilee edition of the EU PVSEC, Stefan Nowak (EU PVSEC Executive Committee) looks back at the beginnings but also sets the tone for the future. Joao Serra, General Chair of the 40th EU PVSEC, Carlos Moedas, mayor of Lisbon and former EU Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation as well as Salla Saastamoinen,
Deputy Director General of the European Commission's Joint Research
Centre will address the numerous PV Experts at this years’ conference.
At the end of this insightful session, Diana Ürge-Vorsatz,
Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),
will deliver a powerful keynote speech on "Photovoltaics in the Context
of the Climate Crisis". The session will conclude with a moderated panel
discussion on the role of PV in mitigating climate change, featuring
experts like Thomas Reindl, Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, Carlos Moedas, Walburga Hemetsberger, and Gunter Erfurt. The panel will be moderated by journalist Miguel Prado.
The scientific opening will set the stage for discussions on the future
of solar energy and its crucial role in addressing climate challenges.
